Saint Basil the Blessed Church

The age of Moscow is nearly nine centuries. The earliest city architecture was represented by a wooden art of building, which can be now judged only by the traditional Russian houses in villages and the wooden Orthodox churches in the north of Russia.

Stone was used for the building of city defense constructions, princely and boyar chambers, and also for Orthodox cathedrals. The churches’ architectural style was borrowed from Byzantines.

The building of religious faith objects in the 16th century evolves the so called “tabernacle style”. Saint Basil the Blessed Church in the Red Square and the Ascension Church in Kolomenskoye are performed exactly in this very style.
